For the first week of February, expand your gardening knowledge by joining a <strong>Gardnervice gardening course<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gardenadvice.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/February-Gardening-Guide.wav\">Click Here<\/a> to listen to the GardenAdvice gardening calendar as and Google deep drive podcast or as an Amazon Alexa briefing skill by searching for <strong>GardenAdvice Weekly calendar<\/strong> in your alexa account. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Spring Bulbs<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you didn\u2019t plant any spring bulbs in autumn, B&amp;Q Superstore has a good deal on pre-forced bulbs (hyacinths, tulips, etc.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These bulbs are about 50mm\u201350cm high and already show flower buds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Recommended choice:<\/strong> <em>Iris reticulata<\/em> \u2013 plant a few in a pot indoors for early flowering in 1\u20132 weeks indoors then they can be moved outside.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spring bulb care:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Feed emerging bulbs with Growmore or liquid tomato food.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeding now ensures energy storage for next year\u2019s flowers which are created inside the bulb duru-ing the current season. .<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sowing Sweet Peas<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chip and soak sweet pea seeds before sowing in pots.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Young seedlings can tolerate frost but are best started on a windowsill or first.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once 100mm high, move them outside.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bare Root Planting<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Last couple of weeks for bare root planting, particularly hedging.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ideal time to complete any bare root hedge planting projects before spring growth begins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leylandii Hedge Problems<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many gardeners report Leylandii hedges turning brown and dying back. This is to do with fungal disease caused by climate change<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Browned areas won\u2019t recover; consider removing affected hedges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Alternative:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gradual transition to yew hedging by planting new yew trees at the base of the leylandii hedges in between the existing leylandi plants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over the next few years, yew will replace the struggling Leylandii as you prune back the existing leylandii plants&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Plant Offers This Week see The GardenAdvice Plant Shop<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Wisteria<\/strong> \u2013 Available at approximately 3 metres high.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Winter Cornus stems<\/strong> \u2013 Brightly coloured stems for winter garden interest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lawn Moss &amp; Maintenance<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Moss is often caused by poor drainage <strong>and<\/strong> incorrect soil pH.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ideal lawn pH: <strong>Above 6.0 <\/strong>(below this, moss thrives).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Solution:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Apply <strong>lime, granulated lime, or bio-lime<\/strong> to correct soil acidity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scarify and rake moss out to encourage healthy lawn regrowth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Winter Fruit Tree Pruning &#8211; summer shoots<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Apples and other fruit trees should be pruned now while leaves are off.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Key technique:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Remove last year\u2019s <strong>long summer shoots<\/strong> that don\u2019t have flower buds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cut back to <strong>2\u20133 buds<\/strong> to encourage fruiting and better growth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lavender Hedge Renewal<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Now is a good time to replace old lavender hedges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pro tip:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shred old lavender plants and use them as a <strong>mulch<\/strong> around the new lavender<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lavender mulch has the ideal pH for growing new lavender successfully.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dividing Snowdrops (Moving in the Green)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Snowdrops can be lifted and divided when <strong>50mm high<\/strong> the is called \u201cin the green\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moving \u201cin the green\u201d (while actively growing) improves establishment and has a higher establishment rate than planting snow drop bulbs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Camellia &amp; Rhododendron Feeding<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As camellias and rhododendrons start to flower, feed with <strong>liquid tomato food<\/strong> (high potash).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supports healthy blooms and overall plant strength.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>GardenAdvice Plant Swap &amp; Offers<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Plant Swap:<\/strong> Many plants available to exchange this week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>GardenAdvice Gardening Course Members:<\/strong> Receive <strong>12 free plants<\/strong> without needing to swap.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Garden Advice&nbsp;Calendar highlights key gardening tasks and solutions based on our latest advice to members.
