This week\u2019s focus is on <strong>tidying, pruning, feeding, and planning<\/strong> \u2014 setting your garden up for a productive spring while protecting it through the wetter, windier months.<br>Every hour spent now will pay dividends when the first bulbs bloom and the new growth returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Cut Back Roses and Fuchsias After Flowering<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once flowering has finished, <strong>cut back fuchsias and shrub roses to around 18 inches (45 cm)<\/strong>. This light autumn pruning helps prevent the plants being rocked by winter winds.<br>A more detailed pruning can be carried out in <strong>spring<\/strong>, once the buds begin to break.<br>After pruning, give each plant a feed of <strong>Growmore fertiliser<\/strong> \u2014 a <strong>handful (around 35\u201340 g) per 0.5 m\u00b2<\/strong>, sprinkled evenly around the base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Tidy and Mulch Borders<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now is an excellent time to <strong>weed borders<\/strong>, <strong>remove dead foliage<\/strong>, and <strong>tidy perennials<\/strong>.<br>Apply a <strong>clean mulch<\/strong>, such as <strong>spent mushroom compost, woodchips, or bark<\/strong>, to lock in moisture and protect the soil.<br>If you\u2019ve had problems with annual weeds during summer, <strong>lay flattened cardboard<\/strong> on the soil before mulching \u2014 it will hold down weeds, rot away within 8\u201310 months, and enrich the soil as it decomposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Feed Pots and Plant Spring Bulbs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Give all <strong>pots and containers<\/strong> a <strong>final feed<\/strong> of a <strong>high-potash fertiliser<\/strong> (such as liquid tomato feed) to strengthen roots before winter.<br>Add bulbs like <strong>crocus<\/strong>, <strong>iris reticulata<\/strong>, and <strong>tulips<\/strong> for early-spring colour.<br>Plant bulbs at <strong>twice their own depth<\/strong> and in <strong>clusters of 8\u201315 bulbs<\/strong> for a stronger display.<br><em>(B&amp;Q currently have excellent offers on crocus and tulip bulbs \u2014 a good time to stock up.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Start a Wildflower Meadow<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Autumn is ideal for starting a <strong>wildflower patch or mini meadow<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kill turf using <strong>black plastic or sheeting for about four weeks<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rake and prepare the soil to a fine tilth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sow wildflower seed mixes suited to your soil type \u2014 <strong>Cornflower, Poppy, Oxeye Daisy, and Knapweed<\/strong> are excellent choices.<br>More detailed sowing and maintenance notes are available <a>here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Composting and Leaf Collection<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As autumn leaves fall, start collecting them for <strong>leaf mould compost<\/strong> \u2014 it\u2019s <em>gold dust<\/em> for gardeners.<br>Build compost bins from <strong>old pallets<\/strong> and feed the heap with <strong>Growmore every two months<\/strong>.<br>Keep the compost <strong>moist but not wet<\/strong>, and cover with <strong>old carpet or hessian<\/strong> to retain warmth over winter.<br>By next autumn, you\u2019ll have rich, crumbly leaf mould to use as mulch or soil improver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Apply Lime to Acidic Lawns<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your lawn soil is on the <strong>acidic side (below pH 6)<\/strong>, now\u2019s the time to <strong>apply granulated garden lime<\/strong> \u2014 about <strong>two handfuls per m\u00b2<\/strong>.<br>Apply before rain or when the ground is damp.<br>The lime will gradually wash in, balancing pH and improving lawn colour and health through winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7. Prune and Train Climbers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When <strong>wisteria<\/strong> loses its leaves, prune back summer growth and tie new shoots onto supports or wires to guide next year\u2019s flowering structure.<br>Likewise, <strong>prune back jasmine and clematis<\/strong> once they\u2019ve finished flowering.<br>\u26a0\ufe0f Note: <em>Jasminum nudiflorum<\/em> is <strong>winter-flowering<\/strong>, so wait until after it blooms before cutting back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8. Refresh Patios and Decking<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Apply <strong>Doff Patio Cleaner<\/strong> or a similar product to remove algae and prevent slippery surfaces.<br>Simply <strong>water it on and brush it in<\/strong> with a stiff broom \u2014 winter rain will do most of the work over the next few months, leaving your patio clean and bright again by spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>9. Feed and Protect Garden Borders<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For general feeding, apply <strong>Growmore fertiliser<\/strong> at about one handful per square metre before winter mulching.<br>This ensures soil nutrients aren\u2019t depleted by decaying organic matter.<br>It\u2019s also worth feeding <strong>hedges<\/strong> with Growmore once a year to maintain their density and colour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10. Plan Next Year\u2019s Vegetable Beds<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it may feel early, <strong>now\u2019s the time to plan your 2026 vegetable garden<\/strong>.<br>Consider <strong>crop rotation<\/strong> to keep soil healthy and avoid disease build-up.<br>You can also sow <strong>green manure<\/strong> (like winter rye or clover) to protect bare soil, prevent nutrient loss, and boost fertility for next spring\u2019s planting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Autumn is now firmly underway \u2014 the perfect time for tidying, pruning, mulching, and preparing the garden for winter and the spring ahead.
