This is a transitional week\u2014perfect for finishing winter maintenance like pruning and dormant planting, while simultaneously starting the engine on the new season with indoor sowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are your key tasks to get ahead this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In the Greenhouse &amp; Indoors<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Start Tender Crops:<\/strong> It is time to start seeds for crops that need a long growing season and warmth. Get your <strong>Aubergines<\/strong>, <strong>Chillies<\/strong>, and <strong>Peppers\/Capsicum<\/strong> going now, ideally in a heated propagator.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Herbs:<\/strong> Start early sowings of <strong>Basil<\/strong> on a sunny windowsill. You should also start <strong>Parsley<\/strong> indoors now, as it can be slow to germinate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Onions &amp; Leeks:<\/strong> Sow leeks and onions from seed indoors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cucumbers:<\/strong> If you have a heated greenhouse space, you can sow cucumbers now.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tomatoes:<\/strong> <em>Look ahead:<\/em> Prepare to sow tomato seeds indoors from late February.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Compost Tip:<\/strong> When sowing seeds indoors, we recommend using <strong>Coco Coir compost<\/strong> to ensure better root growth and reduce transplant shock later on.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Houseplants:<\/strong> As light levels increase, repot houseplants using <strong>John Innes No. 1 or No. 2<\/strong> soil-based compost to refresh their nutrients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Edible Garden: Fruit &amp; Veg<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Winter Wash:<\/strong> Apply a winter wash (such as Vitax Winter Tree Wash) to fruit trees, particularly apples. This is crucial for eliminating pest eggs and mildew spores before the season starts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pruning:<\/strong> Complete the pruning of all dormant fruit trees (<strong>Apple, Pear, Cherry, Medlar<\/strong>) before the buds break.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Planting:<\/strong> This is the ideal window to plant bare-root fruit trees and cane fruit (<strong>Blackberries and Raspberries<\/strong>) while they are still dormant (until March).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Soil Preparation:<\/strong> Apply a general feed of <strong>Growmore fertiliser<\/strong> to all prepared vegetable beds. Use one handful per square metre and let the rain wash it in.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pest Control:<\/strong> Get prepared by ordering <strong>slug nematodes<\/strong> now, so you are ready to apply them before the main spring planting begins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ornamental &amp; Flower Garden<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Wisteria Care:<\/strong> Give your Wisteria a boost by feeding it now with liquid tomato feed (high potash) to aid in strong flower formation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hydrangeas:<\/strong> Prune hydrangeas as the buds start to show, reducing them by no more than 30%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Perennials:<\/strong> Lift and divide herbaceous perennials like <strong>Yarrow<\/strong> before the new growth really takes off.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rose Cuttings:<\/strong>  now is the perfect time to take some <a href=\"https:\/\/gardenadvice.co.uk\/gardening-how-to\/garden-plants\/cultivating-beauty-propagating-old-roses-from-hardwood-cuttings\/\">rose cutting<\/a> as you prune back your rose <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Learn in Your Own Garden<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Need hands-on help with these tasks?
