In some cases they highlight an issue that needs correcting, and in others they may actually offer a practical solution for modern lawns.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"728\" data-end=\"731\">\n<h3 data-start=\"733\" data-end=\"765\"><strong data-start=\"736\" data-end=\"765\">Why Moss Appears in Lawns<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"767\" data-end=\"921\">Moss rarely invades a lawn unless the grass is already under stress. One of the most common causes is <strong data-start=\"869\" data-end=\"910\">soil pH becoming too low (too acidic)<\/strong> over time.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"923\" data-end=\"1177\">Lawns are regularly fertilised, often for many years, and most lawn fertilisers gradually acidify the soil. While grass does grow best in <strong data-start=\"1061\" data-end=\"1091\">slightly acidic conditions<\/strong>, ideally at a pH of around <strong data-start=\"1119\" data-end=\"1134\">6.0 to 6.25<\/strong>, problems start when the pH drops below 6.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1179\" data-end=\"1212\">When soil becomes <strong data-start=\"1197\" data-end=\"1211\">too acidic<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1213\" data-end=\"1370\">\n<li data-start=\"1213\" data-end=\"1243\">\n<p data-start=\"1215\" data-end=\"1243\">Grass growth is suppressed<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1244\" data-end=\"1286\">\n<p data-start=\"1246\" data-end=\"1286\">Nutrient uptake becomes less efficient<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1287\" data-end=\"1370\">\n<p data-start=\"1289\" data-end=\"1370\">Moss, which tolerates acidic conditions far better than grass, begins to thrive<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1372\" data-end=\"1449\">This is why moss often appears even in lawns that are regularly fed and mown.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1451\" data-end=\"1481\"><strong data-start=\"1455\" data-end=\"1481\">Correcting the Problem<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1482\" data-end=\"1754\">The solution isn\u2019t just removing the moss \u2014 it\u2019s correcting the cause. Testing the soil pH is the first step. Where acidity is too high, applying <strong data-start=\"1628\" data-end=\"1643\">garden lime<\/strong> will gently raise the pH back into the ideal range for grass, allowing it to recover and out-compete the moss.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1756\" data-end=\"1883\">Once the pH is corrected, moss removal (by scarifying or raking) followed by overseeding will give much longer-lasting results.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1885\" data-end=\"1888\">\n<h3 data-start=\"1890\" data-end=\"1924\"><strong data-start=\"1893\" data-end=\"1924\">What About Clover in Lawns?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1926\" data-end=\"2134\">Clover tends to appear in lawns where grass is thin or where nitrogen levels are lower. Traditionally it has been viewed as a weed and, if unwanted, it can be controlled with a <strong data-start=\"2103\" data-end=\"2133\">selective lawn weed killer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2136\" data-end=\"2187\">However, clover leaves are quite waxy, which means:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2188\" data-end=\"2312\">\n<li data-start=\"2188\" data-end=\"2259\">\n<p data-start=\"2190\" data-end=\"2259\">Weed killers may not penetrate effectively on the first application<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2260\" data-end=\"2312\">\n<p data-start=\"2262\" data-end=\"2312\">Two treatments are often needed for full control<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2314\" data-end=\"2358\">That said, attitudes to clover are changing.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2360\" data-end=\"2363\">\n<h3 data-start=\"2365\" data-end=\"2411\"><strong data-start=\"2368\" data-end=\"2411\">Clover, Climate Change and Modern Lawns<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2413\" data-end=\"2584\">With <strong data-start=\"2418\" data-end=\"2462\">wetter winters and warmer, drier summers<\/strong> becoming increasingly common in the UK, clover is now being seen by many gardeners as an advantage rather than a problem.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2586\" data-end=\"2617\">Clover offers several benefits:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2618\" data-end=\"2829\">\n<li data-start=\"2618\" data-end=\"2662\">\n<p data-start=\"2620\" data-end=\"2662\">It stays greener during hot, dry periods<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2663\" data-end=\"2717\">\n<p data-start=\"2665\" data-end=\"2717\">It copes well with wet winters and compacted soils<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2718\" data-end=\"2764\">\n<p data-start=\"2720\" data-end=\"2764\">It improves soil health by fixing nitrogen<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2765\" data-end=\"2829\">\n<p data-start=\"2767\" data-end=\"2829\">It helps maintain lawn colour when grass struggles in summer<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2831\" data-end=\"2942\">For this reason, many people are now choosing to <strong data-start=\"2880\" data-end=\"2910\">keep clover in their lawns<\/strong>, or even actively encourage it.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2944\" data-end=\"2974\"><strong data-start=\"2948\" data-end=\"2974\">The Clover Lawn Option<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2975\" data-end=\"3151\">Rather than removing clover, it\u2019s worth considering whether a <strong data-start=\"3037\" data-end=\"3068\">mixed grass and clover lawn<\/strong> might be a better long-term solution. Overseeding with additional clover seed can:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3152\" data-end=\"3275\">\n<li data-start=\"3152\" data-end=\"3181\">\n<p data-start=\"3154\" data-end=\"3181\">Improve year-round colour<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3182\" data-end=\"3225\">\n<p data-start=\"3184\" data-end=\"3225\">Increase resilience to weather extremes<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3226\" data-end=\"3275\">\n<p data-start=\"3228\" data-end=\"3275\">Reduce the need for high levels of fertiliser<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3277\" data-end=\"3369\">This approach creates a more sustainable lawn that is better suited to modern UK conditions.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3371\" data-end=\"3374\">\n<h3 data-start=\"3376\" data-end=\"3403\"><strong data-start=\"3379\" data-end=\"3403\">A Change in Thinking about lawns<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3405\" data-end=\"3696\">Moss and clover shouldn\u2019t automatically be treated as enemies. Moss usually signals an underlying soil issue \u2014 most commonly excessive acidity \u2014 that needs correcting.
