\n Can I prune my seriously overgrown (outwards and upwards) holly hedge?
\nAnswer<\/a>
\nHolly is one of those handy shrubs that can be pruned to bare stems, and it will produce new shoots from dormant buds.The best time to do some serious pruning of your holly is in late winter just before the sap starts to rise. If you are intending to reduce the height of your hedge then cut it 400mm below the intended finish height to allow for some new growth.On removing the top section,you will find that several new shoots are produced just below the cut,if you allow these to grow for a season it is then possible to tie them together to form a new top,which will prevent heavy snow from damaging the hedge.
\nIf the hedge is very wide, and it is your intention to cut it back to the original stems in the middle,it would be best to cut back one side at a time, and allow the cut side to recover by producing new shoots before cutting the other side.
