You can do this by locating the hilum (the scar where the seed was attached to the pod) and make the cut to one side of it &#8211; not opposite.  Alternatively you can use rough sand paper to wear the seed coat down a bit. This exercise is to let the water into the seed more easily so that the seed can begin the process of germination.
