The bricks have been laid using lime mortar and a harder sealing joint has been installed as a joint in the pointing process.
\nHowever over the years the harder sealing joint has been lost through the action of the weather.
\nTo maintain the wall in a safe state the wall needs to have its joints raked out of all the loose material and then re-pointed with new mortar. To do this you need to mix 1 part builders sand to 5 parts of cement and plasticiser as per directions on the container.Mix to a creamy texture then leave for
\n10 to 15 minutes to allow the cement to slightly dry and become crumbly.Place on a small board which can be hand held against the joints in the wall and push the mortar into the raked out joints with a small trowel, repeat moving along the joint. Finally strike through the joint to finish it off with the handle of the trowel or a pointing iron.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
If you garden walls have been created from brick and lime mortar\/ Lime putty its likely you are going to have to spent some time maintaining them.
