Put leaves into reused strong garden bags, dampen them if dry, pierce holes for air and drainage, then store in a shady corner. Keep oak and beech leaves separate if there are many, as they break down more slowly.

Timing and precautions: Early November is ideal because leaf fall is underway and collected leaves can begin breaking down over winter. Avoid leaving thick wet leaves on lawns for long periods.

Plant tulips and late spring bulbs in pots or borders

Plant tulip bulbs now in free-draining compost or workable border soil, following packet depth and spacing. In containers, use pots with good drainage holes and leave space below the rim for watering. Water once after planting, then place pots where excess winter rain can drain away.

Timing and precautions: November is the preferred UK planting time for tulips because cooler soil reduces disease risk. Do not plant into frozen, saturated or compacted soil.

Winter wash roses and clear diseased leaves

Once roses are dormant or close to dormant, clear dead and fallen rose leaves from around the base, especially any showing black spot. Apply Vitax Winter Wash according to the label, covering stems carefully. After clearing, add a light protective mulch around the root area, keeping it away from the main stems.

Timing and precautions: November is suitable because pests, eggs and disease spores begin overwintering on stems and fallen foliage. Do not spray in windy weather, during frost, or when rain is imminent.

Winter wash fruit trees and fit grease bands

When fruit trees have dropped their leaves and are dormant, apply Vitax Winter Wash according to the instructions. Fit grease bands around trunks to help stop winter moth and other crawling pests reaching the branches. Check that bands sit snugly against the bark without trapping debris underneath.

Timing and precautions: Mid to late November is a good time once leaf fall is well advanced. Avoid treating trees that still carry many leaves, and do not apply winter wash in freezing, windy or wet conditions.

Plant bare-root soft fruit canes

Plant bare-root raspberries, loganberries or blackberries while dormant. Soak roots briefly before planting if dry, prepare weed-free soil, spread the roots out naturally, firm gently and water in. Add support wires or canes where needed, then mulch around the plants without burying the crowns.

Timing and precautions: Late November is suitable for dormant bare-root planting in the UK, while soil is usually moist and workable. Postpone planting if the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Gardening projects

Plant a pot of spring colour: A quick November project using dwarf daffodils, crocuses, Iris reticulata or tulips to give George early colour after winter.

Start a bag of leaf mould: This recycles autumn leaves from paths and lawns into a useful future soil conditioner.

Give one small border an autumn mulch: Mulching a manageable section now protects soil, suppresses weeds and gradually improves structure over winter.

Further seasonal advice: GardenAdvice gardening calendar. Weekly gardening projects and instructions.

Your gardening calendar for 1 November–30 November 2026.
