Fungitoxic Activity (Direct Toxicity to Fungi)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sulphur interferes with the metabolism of fungal cells. When sulphur is applied to leaves, it oxidizes slowly (especially in the presence of moisture and warmth) to form <strong>sulphur dioxide (SO\u2082)<\/strong> and <strong>hydrogen sulphide (H\u2082S)<\/strong>\u2014both of which are toxic to fungal spores. These compounds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Inhibit fungal respiration<\/strong> by disrupting enzymes in fungal cells.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Damage cell walls<\/strong> and structures, preventing the fungus from growing and reproducing.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Creates an Unfavorable Surface Environment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sulphur changes the <strong>pH<\/strong> on the surface of the leaf, making it <strong>more acidic<\/strong>. Many fungal spores struggle to germinate in lower pH conditions, reducing their ability to infect the plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Prevention of Spore Germination<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even before a fungus penetrates the leaf, sulphur can prevent spores from germinating on the surface. It disrupts the early growth stages of pathogens like <strong>powdery mildew<\/strong>, one of the primary targets of sulphur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Repellent and Protective Barrier<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The powder acts as a <strong>physical barrier<\/strong> that repels some pests and pathogens, reducing the chance of infection. It also reflects some sunlight, potentially reducing humidity on leaf surfaces, which is another deterrent to fungal growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Important Notes:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Best against powdery mildew<\/strong> and some rusts\u2014less effective against downy mildew or systemic fungal infections.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Environmental conditions<\/strong> matter: sulphur is most effective in <strong>warm, dry<\/strong> conditions.
