Notes from the GardenAdvice.co.uk basic use and safely on the use of petrol chainsaws <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Section 1: Chainsaw Maintenance<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
    \n
  • Keep the chainsaw clean to ensure efficiency and longevity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Remove the chain from the bar and clean with oily rags.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Clean the oil guides, as sawdust can block them and prevent lubrication to the chain<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Clean the air filter by tapping and blowing on it or cleaning with petrol.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Inspect and clean the spark plug. Test by holding it against the cowling and pulling the cord to check for sparks in the plug gap<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Adjust the chain tension so that it moves freely but has no more than 5mm (\u00bc inch) of slack pulling the chain away from the bar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Use two-stroke fuel<\/strong>. If unused for a while, shake the machine to reintegrate the oil into the petrol or change for fresh petrol. Only fill or replace the fuel when the chainsaw is cold and use a funnel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Add chain oil<\/strong> to the reservoir for proper chain lubrication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Section 2: Equipment and Safety Gear<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    • Essential tools: chainsaw file<\/strong> (for sharpening), chainsaw spanner<\/strong> (combination tool), and spare spark plugs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Safety gear:\n
        \n
      • Helmet with visor and ear defenders<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Tough gloves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Steel toe cap boots<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Protective clothing, ideally made of chainsaw-resistant material with fibres that stop the chain upon contact.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Section 3: Starting and Operating the Chainsaw<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
          \n
        • Starting procedure<\/strong>:\n
            \n
          • Place the saw on the ground.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Put one foot inside the rear handle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Hold the bar firmly and pull the starter cord.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • If the chainsaw doesn\u2019t fire after a few pulls, check the spark plug<\/strong> or prime the fuel<\/strong> with the small pump found on the side of the chain saw.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Always know the stop button location<\/strong> in case of emergency.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Never use the tip of the chainsaw<\/strong>, as this can cause kickback<\/strong> (violent backward movement).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Avoid using the chainsaw directly in front of your body; keep it to the side.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Check chain tension regularly\u2014a loose chain may come off and cause injury<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Warm up the chainsaw before use by revving it for a few minutes once started.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            Section 4: Chainsaw Handling and Worksite Safety<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
              \n
            • Maintain situational awareness<\/strong>:\n
                \n
              • Plan an escape route<\/strong> in case something goes wrong so you can walk away safely.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • Be aware of brambles, obstacles, other people, and animals<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • Remember, ear defenders limit your ability to hear others<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • Avoid overconfidence<\/strong>, but also don\u2019t be hesitant\u2014confidence should be balanced for safe operation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • Limit vibration exposure<\/strong>:\n
                  \n
                • Excessive chainsaw use can lead to white finger<\/strong>, a serious and irreversible condition where the blood from your fingers is vibrated out of the cells in your hand or fingers by the vibration of the chain saw.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • Use the chainsaw for a maximum of 10 minutes at a time<\/strong>, then take breaks to sharpen the chainsaw or tidy up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                  Section 5: Cutting Techniques and Avoiding Traps<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
                    \n
                  • Plan your cuts carefully<\/strong>:\n
                      \n
                    • Avoid compression wood<\/strong> (wood that closes the gaps created by sawing and traps the saw).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                    • When cutting large branches or logs, make an initial cut underneath<\/strong> to prevent binding or compression wood.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                    • Use plastic or metal wedges<\/strong> to free a trapped chainsaw rather than forcing it out. Always switch the saw off.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                    • If unsure or something seems wrong, stop the chainsaw, place it on the ground, and walk away<\/strong> before reassessing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                      Section 6: First Aid and Emergency Preparedness<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
