Sowing grass seed can be a tricky business you need the best conditions to get high levels of germination, all the gardening books simply say the best time is in the spring or autumn and thats because often the people writing the book have never sown grass seed. The answer as to when to sow grass seed is largely down to the weather conditions at the time, as a guide in the later winter or spring as the daffodil<\/em><\/span> Narcissus\u00a0 <\/span>start to flower the light conditions and temperature is just about right for the best time to sow grass seed. And in the autumn \/ winter its normally as the leaves on the trees start to turn into autumn colours ending a week before xmas. It might be cold in the run up until xmas but most years in the UK the soil contains enough heat built up through the summer to germinate grass seed.
\nThe key in sowing grass seed is to make sure the seed has an even moisture content for at least 21 day during the germination period. The best way to achieve this is to lightly compact the soil after sowing with a roller or on small areas walking up and down a plank that can be moved over the seeded area.
