In practice, many never quite deliver on the second half of that promise. They work fine as an office. The moment someone actually needs to stay over, it becomes obvious the room was never properly set up as a bedroom.

Why most garden rooms fail as a spare bedroom

Most garden rooms get furnished with a desk, a sofa bed, and whatever shelving was already fitted. For one night that’s fine. Ask a guest to stay through a weekend and the gaps start showing fast — clothes living out of a suitcase on the floor, nothing to hang anything on, no real sense that the room has switched from office to bedroom even temporarily. The furniture never actually changed what the room is being asked to do. It just got a second job on top of the first.

The space problem most conversions get wrong

Most garden rooms are a fraction of the size of an actual bedroom, which limits what can realistically go inside. A standard wardrobe or chest of drawers, sized for a proper bedroom, rarely fits the available wall space. When it does fit, it tends to swallow up a room that’s supposed to feel open enough to work in during the day. So the usual compromise is no real storage at all — which is exactly the gap guests end up noticing. What actually solves it isn’t just buying something smaller at random. It’s furniture proportioned specifically for a room this size, built to offer genuine hanging and folded storage without eating into the floor area a desk and chair also need.

Making the dual purpose actually work

A room doing two jobs needs furniture that can get out of the way visually and physically. Open shelving that looks fine as office storage tends to look like clutter the moment it’s full of someone else’s folded clothes during a video call the next morning. Closed storage — proper doors, not open cubes — solves this in both directions: it keeps work materials out of sight when the room needs to look professional, and keeps a guest’s belongings out of sight when the room needs to look like a bedroom. The furniture doing double duty is what makes the dual-purpose idea work, rather than the room awkwardly sharing two unrelated functions.

What’s actually worth the investment

It’s tempting to furnish a garden room with whatever flat-pack piece happens to be the right rough size, but a garden room gets more wear on its furniture than people expect — used daily as an office, then expected to switch roles convincingly a few times a month. One well-proportioned piece of storage furniture, built for the room’s actual dimensions rather than scaled down from a standard bedroom range, tends to outlast several cheaper replacements and does a noticeably better job of making the space feel like a real bedroom rather than an office with a mattress in it. Furniture LL Design builds bedroom storage sized around exactly this kind of real-world constraint — rooms that need to work properly in less space than a standard bedroom allows, not furniture that’s simply been shrunk to fit.

Garden rooms have become one of the most common home upgrades in the UK over the last few years, and most are sold on the same pitch: a home office that can also sleep...

[78

post-8413","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-general
["GET
