This process is known as <strong>pricking out<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim is to transplant seedlings without \u201cchecking\u201d them. <em>Checking<\/em> means disturbing or damaging the roots so badly that growth slows or becomes stunted. Careful handling is essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to Prick Out<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Seedlings are ready when they have developed their <strong>second pair of true leaves<\/strong> and are strong enough to be handled easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Handle Seedlings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Always hold a seedling by one of its leaves \u2014 preferably the second pair \u2014 <strong>never by the stem<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a leaf is damaged, the plant will simply grow new leaves.<br>If the stem is damaged, however, the plant cannot repair it, and the seedling is likely to fail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lifting the Seedling<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Using a dibber or a short stick:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gently ease the seedling out of the compost.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lift it carefully, keeping as much of the root system intact as possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid tugging or pulling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Potting On<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Prepare a small pot \u2014 typically <strong>75\u2013100 mm (3\u20134 inches)<\/strong> in diameter, depending on the plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fill the pot with fresh compost.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make a hole large enough to accommodate the roots without bending them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower the seedling into the hole so it sits at <strong>the same depth<\/strong> it was growing in the seed tray.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lightly press the compost around the roots with your fingers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not ram the compost down firmly with a stick. Gentle pressure is sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aftercare<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Water the seedling in carefully using a watering can fitted with a fine rose. This settles the compost naturally around the roots and removes air pockets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The seedling may lean slightly after watering, but it will quickly straighten itself as it establishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Handled correctly, seedlings will continue growing without any setback, ensuring strong, steady development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pricking Out Seedlings Once your seeds have germinated and the young plants are large enough to handle comfortably, they should be moved into individual pots.
