Miscanthus sinensis
15 October 2026

Plant name: *Miscanthus sinensis*
**Common name:** Chinese silver grass / Japanese silver grass
**Identification confidence:** High for *Miscanthus sinensis*; cultivar **not reliably identifiable** from this photograph.
**Main subject and ambiguity:**
The main plant appears to be a large ornamental grass with arching, silvery-beige autumn flower plumes. There are other grasses/woody stems in the background, but the dominant plant is the *Miscanthus*.
## Distinguishing features
- Tall, clump-forming ornamental grass.
- Long, narrow, arching green leaves.
- Feathery, silky flower plumes held above the foliage.
- Plumes turning pale silver-beige in autumn/winter.
- Dense, fountain-like habit.
## Mature height and spread
- **Height:** Usually around **1.2–2 m**, depending on cultivar and growing conditions.
- **Spread:** Around **1–1.5 m**.
## Flowering season
- Typically **late summer to autumn**, with seed heads remaining attractive into winter.
## Suitable soil and light
- **Light:** Best in **full sun**, but will tolerate light shade. Flowering is usually better in sun.
- **Soil:** Prefers **moist but well-drained soil**; tolerates most garden soils once established.
- Avoid very wet, waterlogged ground in winter.
## Watering
- Water well during establishment, especially in dry spells.
- Once established, it is reasonably drought tolerant, but looks best with some moisture in summer.
## Feeding
- Usually needs little feeding.
- In spring, apply a light mulch of garden compost or well-rotted organic matter.
- Avoid excessive high-nitrogen feeding, as this can encourage floppy growth.
## Pruning care
- Leave the dry stems and plumes standing through winter for structure and wildlife value.
- Cut back hard to around **10–20 cm above ground in late winter to early spring**, before new shoots start growing strongly.
- Wear gloves, as the leaf edges can be sharp.
This is a good architectural grass for a UK mixed border, especially where you want autumn and winter movement and texture.
