How to Grow a Weeping Willow from Cuttings: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide
Bringing the Elegance of Weeping Willows to Your Garden
Few trees possess the graceful, iconic silhouette of a weeping willow. With their sweeping branches and serene presence, they are a prized addition to any landscape. While many gardeners purchase established trees from nurseries, you can easily propagate your own at home. Weeping willows are incredibly prolific and are surprisingly easy to grow from hardwood cuttings.
By following a simple process during the dormant season, you can multiply your willow population with minimal effort and cost. Whether you are looking to create a natural screen or add a focal point to a damp area of your garden, this guide will walk you through the process, drawing on expert advice from GardenAdvice.
Step-by-Step: Growing Your Own Weeping Willow
Propagating willow is a rewarding project for gardeners of all levels. Follow these eight steps to ensure your cuttings take root successfully:
- 1. Choose the right time: The best time to take cuttings is during the dormant season, which runs from late autumn through winter to early spring. During this period, the plant is not actively growing, making it ideal for cuttings. GardenAdvice recommends selecting one-year-old stems for the best results.
- 2. Select healthy stems: Walk around your tree and select straight, healthy shoots that are roughly the thickness of a pencil. Always avoid wood that looks weak, damaged, or shows signs of disease.
- 3. Prepare your sections: Cut the stem into manageable lengths of about 100–150 mm. A pro tip for success: make your top cut just above a bud and the bottom cut just below a bud joint. This encourages healthy growth from the top and root development at the base.
- 4. Prepare your planting spot or pot: Willows love moisture, but cuttings can rot in stagnant, heavy soil. Use a free-draining medium. If planting in a border, mix in a little sand to improve drainage.
- 5. Insert the cuttings: Carefully push each cutting into the soil or potting mix, leaving approximately 50 mm visible above the surface. Firm the soil well around the stem to eliminate air pockets.
- 6. Water in: Give your new cuttings a thorough watering. Moving forward, keep the soil or compost consistently moist, but be careful to avoid waterlogged conditions, which can lead to rot before roots are established.
- 7. Wait for rooting: Patience is key. Leave your cuttings undisturbed throughout the following growing season. After about 12 months, your cuttings should have developed a root system strong enough for transplanting.
- 8. Transplant when ready: Once the cuttings are well-rooted, you can move them to their final permanent location or pot them up into larger containers.
Important Considerations Before You Plant
Because the weeping willow is such a vigorous grower, it is essential to plan carefully. Willow roots very easily—sometimes even when stems simply touch damp soil—and can spread rapidly. Ensure you have plenty of space before planting a tree in its final spot. If you are unsure of the ultimate placement, keeping your cuttings in large pots for the first few years is a wise strategy that allows you to manage their growth and location effectively.
