The Things You Need to Know Before Building a Fence

Having fencing in your garden is really beneficial, but before you get started on building your fence, there are a few important things you need to do. Whilst building a fence is a fairly straightforward process, if you don’t do some key preparation beforehand you could really find yourself struggling.
 
Know the Purpose
When you decide to add a fence to the garden, there’s more often than not a reason behind you doing so. Whether it’s to keep the dog in the garden, keep the neighbors from peering into your garden on a sunny afternoon, or simply add a little privacy to your home, you need to know why you’re adding the fence to ensure you’re doing it in the best way. A prime example of this would be adding a strong, durable fence to keep your dog inside. This fence would need to be high enough for them to not be able to jump over, whilst also being completely secure with no gaps in any of the paneling. Similarly, if you only need to keep the garden separate from your neighbors, but don’t mind it being lower than normal, you may want to opt for a traditional picket fence to add to the aesthetics of the garden over the practical elements.
Research First
Before you invest your money in some fencing from the local timber merchants or garden centre, you want to be sure you’re getting the right thing. There are so many different types of fencing, so you need to do some research to find out what is available to you and what will work best in your garden. You can also research prices to find the best cost in your area, as you may find that one retailer is selling the panels for slightly cheaper, when the material itself is just as good quality wise.
Select a Material
Deciding on the right material for your fencing can be challenging, especially if you don’t know the difference between the options you have. Have a think of which fencing style is going to suit your garden and your needs best, as this will then help you to find a material that looks right, whilst meeting the needs you have at the same time. Investing your money in some treated timber is going to ensure you have durable, high-quality materials that are guaranteed to stand heavy weather conditions for many years to come. Whereas, having a small painted fence may result in cracked or faded paint that may need frequent maintenance after the heavy weather has been.
Be Considerate
Whilst introducing fencing to your garden is going to really boost the safety, privacy and security, you don’t know how it’s going to look to your neighbors. Many people go ahead and add fencing to the garden without giving their neighbors the heads up, and this can often cause an issue or two. By consulting your neighbor and just letting them know your plans, they can prepare for their garden to look different too. They may even want to add a little input to help make the fencing work for both gardens. At the end of the day, you share this area with your neighbour, so you want to be considerate and let them know what’s going on out of respect and kindness.
