Using Mirrors With Indoor And Outdoor Planting.
Using mirrors in both indoor and outdoor planting schemes can add interest and another dimension to a planting scheme especially if the mirrors are back light to use the effect of reflections at night or in low level light situations. Some of the commonest ways to use mirrors in indoor and outdoor planting schemes are as follows
1. False water features – using mirrors it is possible to create the effect of a false water feature both indoors and outdoors. This is done by simply laying a mirror on the floor and planting around it so the foliage for the plants covers the edges of the mirror in an informal way. The mirror relects the plants and other items to the side of it and above it in the same way as that water would creating the effect of reflections in water.
2. View to another part of a garden that does not exist – by installing a mirror on a wall and surrounding it with a frame or some trellis it is possible to use the reflection to create a false view which appears to be the view into another part of your garden. In addition to this by slightly altering the angle of the mirror its possible to create this view from different parts of the garden or planting scheme leading you eye to the mirror and creating interest. One helpful tip which creating this effect is to place a planter or pot about a metre in front or the mirror to cover the base of the mirror and its reflection, this helps to make
the reflection look different from the view you see looking into the mirror
3. illuminating and uplight a mirror – One of the best effects you can achieve with a mirror installed on a wall combined with a planting scheme is to illuminate a mirror with up-lighting or side lighting, with foliage planting around and in front of the mirror to create soft shadows and texture. In addition to this it is also possible to uplight a mirror so that it throws soft light onto another garden feature such as a plant of planted tub or pots increasing the effect the dramatic effect in low light levels or night time.
