Garden Planting Brief and Concept

🌿 Overall Planting Scheme

The garden is designed around a strong structural framework (trees, shrubs, hedging), softened with naturalistic perennial planting.

  • Rear planting provides a screen and backdrop
  • Central island bed creates a focal feature
  • Patio planting offers colour and detail close to the house
  • Side and transition beds provide flow and connection

Planting is layered:

  • Low ground cover
  • Mid-height perennials
  • Taller accents and grasses

Seasonal interest runs from:

  • Spring bulbs → summer perennials → autumn structure and colour

🌳 Bed-by-Bed Planting Description & Plant Lists

🌳 Bed 1 – Rhododendron Bed (Rear Screen)

Description

This area will form a dense evergreen screen, with rhododendrons and azaleas providing height and structure. Beneath them, a woodland-style underplanting will create a soft, shaded layer of interest throughout the year.

Seasonal planting will include spring bulbs and summer colour to ensure continuous interest.

Plant List

  • Rhododendrons (existing)
  • Azaleas (existing)
  • Brunnera (‘Jack Frost’ + standard)
  • Begonias (low-growing, seasonal)
  • Pulmonaria
  • Epimedium
  • Tiarella
  • Primroses
  • Cyclamen
  • Bulbs (autumn planting):
    • Dwarf daffodils
    • Crocus

🌿 Bed 2 – Island Bed (Central Feature)

Description

The island bed is the main focal point, centred around a multi-stem Amelanchier, with evergreen shrubs providing year-round structure.

Planting is soft and flowing, dominated by salvia, grasses, and echinacea, with extended seasonal colour into autumn.

Daisy-type flowers dominate, supported by vertical interest from climbers.

Plant List

  • Astrantia
  • Cosmos
  • Echinacea
  • Low-growing Scabiosa
  • Agapanthus
  • Alliums
  • Clematis (montana or similar)

🌿 Bed 4 – Trellis Gate / Transition Area

This area acts as a link between spaces, with slightly taller planting and repeated use of salvia to unify the design.

Climbers and mixed perennials create a layered, natural feel.

Plant List

  • Clematis (through pyracantha)
  • Salvia
  • Pulmonaria
  • Rudbeckia
  • Coreopsis
  • Achillea
  • Campanula
  • Foxgloves (Digitalis)

🌿 Bed 5 – Side Border Towards the Garages

Description

This border will develop into a looser, naturalistic planting area, helping to soften the transition towards the garages.

Planting will be robust and colourful, with a mix of perennials and grasses.

Plant List

  • Achillea
  • Helenium
  • Penstemon
  • Astrantia
  • Foxgloves
  • Campanula
  • Agapanthus
  • Ornamental grasses

🌱 Final Notes

  • Use repetition of key plants (salvia, astrantia, grasses) to unify the garden
  • Maintain clear structure from shrubs and focal plants
  • Allow planting to naturalise and soften over time
  • Mulching and feeding will support establishment
  • Seasonal additions (bulbs, begonias, dahlias) will enhance interest
