Spring colour with bulbs planted in the autumn

Planting some garden bulbs in the autumn is the traditional way to ensure you have lots of colour in the spring especially if you are new to gardening. As a general rule, they need to be planted before Christmas and planted at twice the depth of the bulb.
In heavy soil planting with some horticultural dug into the soil under the bulbs is often a good idea.
Some gardens have pest problems with newly planted bulbs such as badgers and squirrels. The solution is to grow the bulbs in patches and cover them with chicken wire before covering them with soil to add some protection for the bulbs
