Lathyrus odoratus (cultivar unknown)
9 October 2026

Plant name: *Lathyrus odoratus* (cultivar unknown)
**Common name:** Sweet pea
**Identification confidence:** High
**Distinguishing features:** A climbing annual with curling tendrils, paired grey-green leaflets and large, butterfly-shaped purple flowers. The relatively large blooms carried singly or in small groups fit annual sweet pea better than perennial everlasting pea. The cultivar cannot be identified reliably from the photograph alone.
**Mature height and spread:** Usually 1.5–2.5 m tall and 30–60 cm wide when supported.
**Flowering season:** June to October, particularly if flowers are picked and faded blooms removed regularly.
**Soil and light:** Grow in full sun in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Shelter from strong winds and provide netting, canes or a trellis for support.
**Watering:** Water deeply during dry weather, especially while flowering. Avoid repeatedly wetting the foliage, as sweet peas can develop powdery mildew—the leaves in the photograph show some pale mottling that may indicate early mildew.
**Feeding:** Mix compost or well-rotted organic matter into the soil before planting. Once buds form, apply a high-potash liquid feed every 10–14 days if growth or flowering is weak.
**Pruning and care:** Tie young shoots to their support until the tendrils take hold. Pick flowers and remove developing seed pods frequently to prolong flowering. Annual sweet peas die after flowering and can be removed and composted once finished.
