Echinacea purpurea hybrid (orange-flowered cultivar; exact cultivar uncertain)
9 October 2026

Plant name: *Echinacea purpurea* hybrid (orange-flowered cultivar; exact cultivar uncertain)
**Common name:** Purple coneflower / coneflower
**Identification confidence:** High for *Echinacea*; low for the precise cultivar.
**Distinguishing features:** Large, daisy-like orange flowers with prominent dark, spiny central cones; sturdy upright stems; and narrow, slightly coarse, lance-shaped leaves. The photograph contains several coneflowers in different colours, but the orange plants are the main subject.
**Mature height and spread:** Approximately 60–90 cm tall and 40–60 cm wide, depending on cultivar.
**Flowering season:** July to September, sometimes continuing into October.
**Soil and light:** Best in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. It tolerates some light shade but may flower less freely. Avoid ground that remains waterlogged over winter.
**Watering:** Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged dry weather. Container-grown plants need more frequent watering, but allow excess water to drain.
**Feeding:** Apply compost or well-rotted organic matter in spring. In containers, use a balanced liquid feed occasionally during active growth; excessive feeding can produce weak, leafy growth.
**Pruning:** Deadhead faded flowers to encourage further blooms. Alternatively, leave some seed heads over winter for structure and birds, then cut old stems to ground level in late winter or early spring. Divide congested clumps in spring every few years.
