Crocus bulb flowers
Spring flowering bulbs bring a splash of colour after the long winter months. With the right timing and technique you can enjoy vibrant displays of daffodils, crocuses, tulips and more. Here’s how to get it right — and links to relevant in-site content.
When & where to plant
- Plant bulbs in the autumn so they can establish roots before winter. One guide suggests ideal planting between September and November for many UK spring bulbs. Horticulture Magazine+1
- Choose a well-drained spot, ideally with some sun or partial shade (though many bulbs tolerate partial shade).
- If your soil is heavy (e.g., clay), improve it by loosening it and adding compost before planting.
How to plant properly
- Dig a hole 2–3 times the height of the bulb. Position the bulb with the pointed end facing up. wildflower.co.uk+1
- Space bulbs according to their size — smaller bulbs closer together, larger ones a bit further apart for good effect.
- Backfill soil and lightly firm down, then water to settle the soil.
- After flowering, leave the foliage to die back naturally — it feeds the bulb for next year’s show.
Tips and special locations
- Plant in naturalised drifts or clusters rather than rigid rows for best effect. Dobies Blog
- Consider planting under trees or shrubs where the bulbs emerge before the canopy fills in. Our article on growing bulbs under trees offers guidance. Growing Bulbs Under Trees GardenAdvice.co.uk
- To extend the display, choose a mix of early, mid and late spring-flowering bulbs so there is a sequence of colour.
