When planting tree and shrubs into chalky soil its a good idea to dig in some well rotted manure, horse ideally but farmyard manure will do. When using manure in the garden its important to make sure its well rotted so it does not burn the roots of the plants being planted plus you need to check its free of weeds. Often heaps of manure are cover in a weed called fat hen which can transfer as seeds in the manure to your garden. If possible its best to take manure from the middle of the heap which will not be effected by weed seeds.
