How to improve your spring lawn

There are several steps you can take to improve your lawn in the spring in the UK:
- Aerate your lawn: This involves creating small holes in the soil to allow water, air and nutrients to reach the roots and importantly it encourages deeper rooting of the grass plants that will help maintain the lawns colour in the hot summer months.
- Apply fertiliser: Use a fertiliser specifically designed for lawns to promote growth and greening. Ideally a fertiliser that is not too high in nutrients or an organic lawn feed.
- Mow regularly: Keep the grass at a consistent height to encourage strong growth. The golden rule when mowing a lawn is not to remove more than a third of the total grass blade length at any one time.
- Overseed bare or thin areas: This will help to fill in any bare or thin patches, giving your lawn a fuller appearance.
- Water and water deeply: Make sure your lawn gets enough water, especially during dry spells.
- Remove weeds and moss: Keep your lawn free of weeds and moss, which can compete with the grass for water and nutrients.
It is important to note that the specific care will depend on the species of grass you have in your lawn, so it is recommended to consult with a lawn expert or conduct some research on the specific type of grass before starting any treatment.
