Ivy on trees – controlling ivy

The ivy on your trees should be pruned every spring and autumn to keep it under control and to stop it from smothering the trees and killing them.
Normally we would recommend removing the ivy altogether by cutting the stems at the base of the tree and then after 4 months once the ivy is dead slowly pulling it out of the tree.

If you wish to kill the ivy altogether you can spray the ivy around the base of the tree with some Round-up weed killer

We have also discovered that ivy tends to grow on trees and shrubs short of nutrients so feeding with some Growmore or another general fertilizer might help keep your trees and plants free from ivy.
