Creating a Wildflower Meadow For butterflies and bees

To create a wildflower meadow it’s best to carry out three key stages.
Firstly remove the grass in a number of areas approximately 1 square metre, This can be carried out with a spade or to spray an area with Roundup weed killer or similar
Secondly In the autumn seed the areas with wildflower seed. With the removal of the turf and sowing the seed the soil needs to be left as undisturbed as possible so you do not bring any other grass or weed seeds to the surface.
Sow some additional wildflower seeds in some plug trays in a cold glasshouse or similar and allow them to germinate over the winter and the spring then transplant them into the wildflower areas.
Finally in the spring and winter spot treat the unwanted weeds and other wildflowers with Roundup weed killer or hand weed to remove them.
At the end of the year cut the grass, allow it to dry and thresh to distribute and seed the wildflowers back into the meadow.
