Green manure for a vegetable garden

Using a crop such as clover or phacelia tanacetifolia is a great way to improve your vegetable garden soil
Often green manure can be used as part of a crop rotation scheme. Crop rotation simply means rotating crops and non-crops such as green manure into different areas as a rotation to prevent the pests or diseases of any one crop from building up in one area.
If a crop is grown in the same area over several years pests and diseases will build up in that area affecting that crop, crop rotation solves this
The benefits of green manure are that it improves the soil structure and once grown is dug into the soil as green manure to add organic matter. In addition, many green manure plants such as clover remove nitrates from the air and add them to the soil helping to improve fertility.
