Feeding Your Spring Bulbs

As your spring bulbs begin to shoot through the soil, it’s an ideal time to give them a small feed to support their growth and ensure strong flowers for next season.

When and How to Feed

Apply a light feed when the first shoots appear, but only when conditions are suitable – avoid feeding if the weather is frosty or the ground is frozen. You have two good options:

  • Granular feed: Scatter a few granules of Growmore fertilizer around the emerging shoots
  • Liquid feed: Apply diluted liquid tomato food according to the package instructions

Why Feeding Matters

Understanding the bulb’s growth cycle helps explain why feeding at this stage is so important:

  • This season’s display: Bulbs flower in the current season using energy that’s already stored within the bulb itself
  • Next season’s preparation: After flowering, as the foliage begins to die back, the bulb absorbs nutrients from the surrounding soil. These nutrients are used to create next year’s flowers, which form in the center of the bulb ready for the following season

By feeding your bulbs now, you’re investing in next year’s spring display, ensuring the bulbs have the nutrients they need to develop strong, healthy flowers for seasons to come.
