Yiota and Harry’s Gardening Calendar For March

Gardening Calendar (March/Early April 2026)
- Lawn Care (Targeted Aeration): Spike the compacted areas of the lawn to improve airflow and drainage.
- Lawn Care (Lime): Assess the lawn and apply lime if necessary, particularly to the problem front patch.
- Fertilizing: Resume the spring liquid feeding regimen for the borders and fruit trees, following the light Growmore top-dressing done around Christmas. If the Wisteria leaves appear discoloured, feed them with Miracle-Gro along with liquid tomato food.
- Pruning (Roses): Thin out any dead wood on the rose growing on the arch to encourage new growth.
- Pruning (Shrubs): Complete the cut-out of the laurel and cut back the Hypericum on the right-hand side.
- Hedge Maintenance: Arrange for the hedge trimmer to reach the higher parts of the hedge.
- Planting (Bulbs): Check the newly planted Crocus (Ruby Giant, Jeanne d’Arc), dwarf daffodils (Tete a Tete), and Iris reticulata. Plant the snowdrops “in the green” if this task was deferred from February.
- Soil Health (Mulch): Organise the delivery and tipping of the spent mushroom compost for top-dressing the borders. A sheet/tarp, wheelbarrow, and bins will be needed for this task.
- Soil Health (Worms): Once the mulch is down, add lobworms to the borders to aid in soil recovery.
- Pest Control: As the weather warms, consider applying the Nemasys slug treatment.
Outstanding Tasks List

- Climbers: Get the trumpet vine for the corner.

Garden Structure and Maintenance
- Fruit Trees: Create frames for the fruit trees and pin them onto the fence.
- Pruning: Arrange for the hedge trimmer to reach the higher parts of the hedge.
- Mulch Delivery: Confirm delivery logistics (best spot for tipping and timing) for the spent mushroom compost.
Confirmation Required
- Clematis Selection: Confirm the specific clematis variety/size.
- Lawn Lime: Confirm final assessment on the need for lime application to the lawn.
- Red Tulips: Confirm the exact red tulip variety for the side borders (behind low hedges). (Note: Yiota provided input for the overall tulip list, but the specific variety for the side borders may need checking).
