Aesculus x Carnea ‘Briotii From Seed.
Normally a large percentage of the seed from Aesculus x carnea ‘Briotii’ the red flowered chestnut is produced sterile and so the plants are normally propagated by grafting.However any of the conkers that do germinate should come true to type or variety.
Its work remembering that before the seed or conkers will germinate they have to go through a period of cool which we think is 60 days just below freezing,so place them in a bag in your fridge over winter.This is called stratification is the process of retreating seeds to simulate natural winter conditions that a seed must endure before germination.Many seed species undergo an embryonic dormancy phase,and generally will not sprout until this dormancy is broken.The time taken to stratify seeds depends on species and conditions; though in many cases two months is sufficient.
