Pruning Back A Magnolia.
Question
Please could I have some advice on pruning back an over grown magnolia shrub?
Answer
Cutting back your magnolia tree: It would be best to wait until it has flowered which it should be doing now or very shortly. This will give it a full year to recover.Try to prune it so it’s balanced: If you cut one side try to cut the other side to balance. Start by removing the dead and diseased branches. Then reduce the size or length of the branches that are left. You could reduce it by up to two thirds; however,if you do this, it will throw out a number of new shoots and you might need to thin them out when they are about 25 mm long so you avoid ending up with a bird’s nest-type effect with loads of thin un-flowering shoots.
