Stinking Water In Water Barrel Garden.

The water in my new water barrel garden has gone stale and stinks.How can I stop this?
Answer
The ideal situation is to achieve a balance in the barrel by adding more plants such as the oxygenating plant canadian pond weed.In a new barrel water garden achieving this balance can take some time often taking a full spring.So the instant solution is to add some potassium permanganate crystals,just mix them into the water until it starts to turn purple; this should be enough.This will make the water relatively sterile,preventing the smell.
