Wisteria Cuttings.
Wisteria cuttings.Your best bet is to take heel or nodal cuttings from the base of current year’s wood now.Put them in sandy peat mix in a propagator. The aim is to keep them in a humid atmosphere.Ideally they want bottom heat of 16 degrees. As with all propagation it is a race between rot and roots! Alternatively, the easiest way but not the fastest, may be to ‘layer’ your Wisteria. To do this you take a low growing branch and heap soil on top of a 30cm section of it ensuring that some buds are covered. This can be done in April/May.Then you need to wait a year until roots have been produced. The cutting can then be separated from the parent plant. The advantage of this method is that the plant stays attached to the parent until it has rooted so there is no problem with rotting.Commercially Wisterias are grafted on to seed grown Wisteria sinensis plants as this is a faster method!
