Yellows And Golds For A September Planter.
We have been asked for a mix of’golden’plants, suitable for a September planter – yes – already!
Here are some ideas, but not a definitive list:
For foliage and bulk there are Euonymus fortunei which has a variegated leaf of emerald green and a deep golden yellow border,Choisya ternata sundance, which planted out,can grow into quite a large bush, but has very attractive greeny-gold leaves and any of the golden-leaved Heucheras, which provide low-growing foliage and add a lovely splash of colour to any planter.
For flowers: Crocosmia ‘Honey angels’ is quite a tall lily-like plant with slender sword-like leaves – a strong grower, with yellow-gold flowers, and which blooms late summer. Other golden and yellow flowers are the daisy-like Coreopsis,Gazania, which goes from light yellow and cream through to a deep red) and Rudbeckia, which flowers through summer and autumn.Useful sprawlers are Lantana, Sanvitalia and if you plant it now, a very pretty trailing nasturtium,(tropaeolum majus) with smallish light yellow flowers.
Add a little contrast to bring out the yellows and golds with a silver-leafed cineraria, or a suitable silvery grass, which could lighten the arrangement, or Athyrium Niponicum metallicum,a lovely Japanese painted fern with variegated silver fronds.
