Mind Your Own Business As A House Plant
Question
I have just purchased a Mind Your Own Business house plant and was wondering if you could supply me with some information on it.
Answer
Mind-your-own-business or ‘baby’s tears’, Soleirolia soleirolii (syn. Helxine soleirolii) grown as a houseplant is a creeping perennial that bears minute flowers and forms dense, slowly spreading mats of bright green foliage. The thin, fleshy, much-branched stems root as they slowly spread. It is a native of Corsica and Sardinia and is occasionally grown in rock gardens and greenhouses.
As a houseplant, the plant needs bright, indirect light for it to be at its best, but never sit it in scorching sunlight. It will also tolerate dappled to moderate shade. It will grow nicely under normal household temperatures, with nights in the 55 – 65 deg F range and daytimes near 70 to 75 deg F. In winter, the temperature must not fall below 45 deg F.
The most critical part of taking care of the plant is to never let it dry out. The soil must be constantly moist or the fleshy stems and leaves are apt to collapse and die. On the other hand, the plant will not stand overly wet, soggy soil either.
Humidity trays should be provided and the foliage should be misted frequently during hot, dry spells with a small hand sprayer.
The plant can be fed every second or third week with a diluted solution of baby bio-soluble liquid fertilizer available from most garden shops and garden centres. For more information
