Papyrus Plants – Will They Survive In The West Wales Climate.

Question
I have recently seen papyrus plants in the aquatic garden centre near us. Despite the owner’s claims,I am sceptical that it will survive in the West Wales climate. What is your opinion/advice? I am keen to get some because it looks so exotic, but is too expensive for death by frost.
Answer
Papyrus (Cyperus Papyrus) You are quite right to be wary;this plant is definitely frost sensitive but as it grows from rhizomes you may be able to cover the crown with a thick mulch during the winter, which will probably give it the protection it needs.I am going to give it a go from seed next year,as I have found it in Mr Fothergill’s catalogue.
