Pruning Pampas Grass.
Question
Can I prune my Pampas Grass?
Answer
Pampas grass, (Cortaderia selloana) benefits from a hard annual pruning, cutting back as far as possible without damaging new growth.Cut tough stems with loppers, wearing goggles and thick gloves as leaf blades have sharp edges.Burning pampas grass is no longer common practice as the crown can be damaged, however, on older plants some very light burning with a pill of newspapers on top of the crown after pruning will often help produce a flush of new growth. After trimming, weed the crown, pulling out loose blades of grass, and mulch around it with organic matter or gravel. Finally feed the plant with a general garden fertilizer and then when the new shoots are 100mm long use a liquid feed ideally one based on seaweed. .
