Similar to numerous other garden plants, roses are highly resilient and can handle rigorous pruning. This process enables them to rejuvenate from dormant buds located within the lower sections of their stems.

Pruning your overgrown floribunda roses not only helps maintain their size and shape but also promotes healthy growth and an abundance of blooms. By cutting back the long canes, you encourage new, vigorous growth from the lower part of the plant. This results in a well-structured and more compact rose bush that produces beautiful, vibrant flowers.

To effectively prune your floribunda roses, follow these steps:

• Choose the right time to prune, typically during late winter or early spring, when the plant is dormant but just before new growth begins.
• Use clean, sharp pruning shears to make clean cuts and prevent the spread of diseases.
• Remove any dead, diseased, or damaged canes first, cutting them back to healthy wood or removing them entirely.
• Shorten the main canes by approximately one-third to one-half of their original length, making a 45-degree angled cut about 1/4 inch above an outward-facing bud.
• Thin out any crowded or crossing canes to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration, which will help prevent disease and promote healthy growth.
• Remove any weak, spindly growth, focusing on retaining strong, healthy canes that will support an abundance of blooms.
• After pruning, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser and add a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
