Growing Bottle Brush (Callistemon) Plants.
Bottle brush plants or Callistemon in the UK and Europe plants that have been introduced from a warmer climate mainly Australia. They are not fully hardy and so need to be planted in a sheltered spot that’s not to exposed to cold winds and frosts in the winter. One good position would be near to a south facing brick wall.Ideally they need a open well drained soil so if you have a clay soil dig in some horticultural grit or sharp sand about 25kgs per square metre.
Through the early spring a liquid feed of a high potash food such as tomato feed will help to induce the plant to create the flowers.
With regards to pruning ideally they should never be pruned more than the removal of one third of the total stem length in any one season.Pruning should take place after flowering has finished.
