Old Plum Trees.
Question
I have an old plum tree – a cherry plum,I believe – Which was unstable and gradually leaning over.It was cut down earlier this year leaving a sucker around 9-10 ft high which I was assured would grow strongly and soon replace the older trunk. But unfortunately this was not supported and was blown down in a gale. Now a large number of small shoots have started to grow from the stump and roots. Can I encourage a single strong new trunk to grow from the roots?.
Answer
With regards to your question on the plum tree you can grow just one of the new shoots into a new main stem.Although please note that many plum tree have been original produced by budding of grafting so the current shoot might be growing from the root stock in which case you will only end up with a common plum tree not the original variety.
