Ajuga ‘Braunherz’ is a handsome creeping bugle forming glossy mats of deep bronze-purple evergreen foliage. Spikes of vivid blue flowers appear in spring, making superb weed-suppressing groundcover for sun or partial shade.

A low, mat-forming evergreen perennial in the mint family, this bugle spreads by short runners to weave a dense, weed-suppressing carpet. It is grown chiefly for its handsome foliage, which holds colour year-round, with the bonus of blue flower spikes in spring, and it is one of the most reliable evergreen groundcovers for sun or shade.

Growing & planting

Plant in autumn or spring in moist but well-drained soil in partial shade or sun. Leaf colour is usually richest in good light with some shelter from fierce midday sun. It tolerates most soils provided they neither bake dry nor sit waterlogged. Space about 30cm apart to form continuous groundcover.

Care & maintenance

Very low-maintenance. Keep the soil from drying out while establishing, trim off faded flower spikes, and lift and split congested mats every few years to maintain vigour. Remove any reverting shoots to keep coloured or variegated forms true.

Propagation

• Division: Lift and divide established mats in spring or autumn, replanting sections immediately.
• Runners: Detach rooted plantlets from the runners through the growing season and replant or pot on.

Pests & diseases

Generally trouble-free. Crown and root rot can occur in wet, poorly drained soil, and powdery mildew may appear if plants dry out in hot weather. Slugs and snails occasionally graze new growth. Good drainage with steady moisture prevents most problems.

Uses in the garden

Ideal as evergreen groundcover for the front of borders, shaded and difficult spots, softening bed and path edges, and adding foliage colour to mixed containers.

Wildlife value

The spring flower spikes provide an early source of nectar for bees and other pollinating insects.
