GardenAdvice notes

A neat, cushion-forming evergreen perennial, thrift forms tight grassy hummocks studded with rounded, papery flower heads on wiry stems. A tough native of sea cliffs and mountains, it thrives in poor, well-drained soil and exposed, sunny positions, and is superb for coastal gardens, rockeries and edging.

Growing & planting

Plant in spring or autumn in full sun in well-drained soil — it prefers poor, sandy or gritty ground and dislikes rich, wet conditions. Ideal for rockeries, gravel, the front of borders, edging and coastal gardens. Space about 25cm apart.

Care & maintenance

Very low-maintenance. Water only while establishing, then it is drought-tolerant. Shear off faded flower heads to keep the cushion neat and encourage more blooms. If the centre of an old plant dies out, lift and divide or replace. Avoid rich feeding, which spoils the compact habit.

Propagation

  • Division: Divide established cushions in spring, replanting the sections.
  • Cuttings: Take basal cuttings in summer.
  • Seed: Sow seed in spring; species come true, though named forms are best from division or cuttings.

Pests & diseases

Generally trouble-free. The main risk is rot from wet, heavy soil, and old plants can go bare in the centre. Sharp drainage keeps it healthy and long-lived.

Uses in the garden

Ideal for sunny rockeries, alpine troughs, gravel gardens, dry stone walls, path and border edging, and coastal and seaside gardens where its salt tolerance shines.

Wildlife value

The nectar-rich flower heads are attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.

Toxicity & safety

Thrift is generally regarded as non-toxic to people and pets.

GardenAdvice tip

The cream-edged foliage of ‘Nifty Thrifty’ gives it interest even out of flower, making it a lovely little evergreen for troughs and pots as well as the rockery. As with all thrift, keep it in full sun with sharp drainage and shear off spent flowers to keep the neat cushion looking its best.
