Hemerocallis ‘Arctic Snow’ is an elegant daylily with large, near-white cream flowers with a green throat through summer. Cool, refined and easy for sunny and mixed borders.

One of the most rewarding and trouble-free of all perennials, the daylily (Hemerocallis) produces a long succession of large, showy, lily-like trumpet flowers through summer, held on strong stems above bold, arching clumps of strap-shaped foliage. Each individual flower lasts just a day — hence the name — but they open in such generous succession that the display continues for many weeks. Tough, adaptable and easy, thriving in almost any soil, it is a superb, dependable border plant.

Growing & planting

Plant in spring or autumn in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade — it flowers best in sun but is remarkably tolerant of most soils and conditions. Improve poor soil with compost. Space about 45–60cm apart. Water while establishing and in dry spells for the best flowering.

Care & maintenance

Low-maintenance. Water in dry spells while in growth and bud for the best flowering. Remove the faded flowers and, once a whole stem has finished, cut it out at the base to keep the plant tidy. Tidy away dead foliage in autumn or spring. Feed and mulch in spring. Lift and divide congested clumps every few years in spring or autumn to keep them vigorous and free-flowering.

Pests & diseases

Generally trouble-free, tough and healthy. Slugs and snails may graze the emerging spring shoots, and daylily gall midge or hemerocallis rust occasionally occur. Dividing every few years keeps clumps vigorous. Otherwise one of the most reliable perennials.

Uses in the garden

Superb in mixed, cottage and sunny borders, in bold groups, on banks and in large containers, where its arching foliage and long succession of showy trumpet flowers bring weeks of colour and easy, dependable structure.

Wildlife value

The flowers are attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects through summer.

Toxicity & safety

Daylilies are generally considered non-toxic to people and dogs. However, they are highly toxic to cats — eating any part can cause severe, potentially fatal kidney failure — so they should not be grown where cats may nibble them, and cat owners should choose with care.
