Viburnum tinus ‘Eve Price’ is a dense evergreen shrub with dark glossy leaves, pink buds opening to white flowers through winter and spring, and blue-black berries. Superb, tough and reliable for hedging and borders.

GardenAdvice notes

One of the most useful and reliable of evergreen shrubs, laurustinus ‘Eve Price’ is a compact, dense form grown for its year-round glossy foliage and, above all, its long winter-to-spring display of pink buds opening to clusters of white flowers, followed by ornamental blue-black berries. Tough, adaptable and tolerant of sun or shade, exposure and coastal conditions, it makes an excellent evergreen shrub, informal hedge or screen.

Growing & planting

Plant in autumn or spring in most well-drained soils in full sun to partial shade — it is very tolerant and undemanding, coping with sun, shade, exposure and coastal sites. For a hedge, space plants about 60cm apart. Water well while establishing.

Care & maintenance

Low-maintenance. Trim to shape after flowering, in spring; it responds well to clipping as a hedge and tolerates hard pruning to renovate. Feed and mulch in spring. Little other attention is needed.

Propagation

  • Cuttings: Take semi-ripe cuttings in summer.

Pests & diseases

Generally trouble-free and tough. Viburnum beetle can occasionally affect the foliage, and it may suffer in very cold, exposed inland gardens, but it is a reliable, resilient shrub.

Uses in the garden

Superb as a dense evergreen shrub, informal or clipped hedge, screen or backdrop, in sun or shade, tolerant of exposure and coastal conditions; its winter flowers make it valuable for year-round structure and interest.

Wildlife value

Valuable for wildlife: the long-lasting winter and spring flowers provide nectar for any pollinators active in mild spells, and the berries are taken by birds; the dense evergreen growth offers nesting and roosting cover.

Toxicity & safety

Laurustinus has a low level of toxicity: the berries may cause mild stomach upset if eaten.

GardenAdvice tip

‘Eve Price’ is a brilliant all-rounder — a tough, glossy evergreen that flowers right through the winter and into spring when little else does, then follows up with blue-black berries. It’s happy in sun or shade, copes with exposure and salt winds, and clips well, making it as good for an informal hedge or screen as for a reliable evergreen anchor in a border.
