Autumn Planting Tips
Verbena bonariensis
Extend the Interest in Your Borders in the late autumn
As the autumn approaches and many of your garden shrubs and plants start to die back, the once-vibrant flowers may begin to fade. However, this doesn’t mean your garden has to lose its charm. By choosing the right plants, you can extend the interest in your borders well into autumn.
One great way to achieve this is by using late-flowering plants with taller stems, such as Anemone × hybrida ‘Honorine Jobert’ and Verbena bonariensis. These plants are perfect for adding structure and beauty when other parts of your garden are winding down for the season.
Anemone × hybrida ‘Honorine Jobert’
This elegant white anemone produces delicate flowers on long, wiry stems. It’s a fantastic addition to any garden because it starts blooming in late summer and continues into autumn. The pure white blooms contrast beautifully with the green foliage and other shrubs, making them a striking feature in your autumn garden.
Verbena bonariensis
Verbena bonariensis, with its clusters of tiny purple flowers, is another excellent choice for autumn colour. Its tall, slender stems rise above lower-growing plants, adding both height and movement to your borders. The flowers are not only attractive but also a magnet for pollinators like bees and butterflies.
Planting for Understory Success
A clever technique to keep your garden looking vibrant later in the year is to plant these late-flowering beauties as an understory beneath your main shrubs. For most of the year, Anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’ and Verbena bonariensis will grow unnoticed beneath the larger foliage. Then, as autumn rolls in, they rise above your other plants and shrubs, creating a stunning display just when you need it most.
These plants are easy to care for, drought-tolerant, and work wonderfully in borders alongside other autumn performers. By integrating them into your garden, you can ensure it remains lively and colourful through the end of the season
