How to renovate your lawn in the autumn

Traditionally autumn is the best time to renovate and improve your lawn. With the weather turning cooler but with the soil still warm from the summer sun it’s easy to spike or use a machine to aerate your lawn.
This will improve the soil structure and form drainage holes which the grassroots will use to grow down into the soil improving the colour of the lawn in the hotter summer months as the grass plants will be able to access more soil water
Other tasks include removing thatch in the base of the grass which is a build-up of dead grass leaves. Thatch can be removed with a spring rake or a scarification machine. It’s also worth cheacking the soil pH as a soil that’s too acid with a low soil pH will not allow the bacteria in the soil to break down the thatch
Finally feeding with a low nitrate lawn food high in potash will help protect the grass against winter fungal diseases. Feeding after you have spiked and just before a rainy period will make sure the lawn feed is washed down and the holes created by the spiking encoraging become deeper rooted.
