GardenAdvice.co.uk – Garden Adviser

Salary: £30,000–£50,000 per annum, depending on grade

The Position
GardenAdvice.co.uk is looking for enthusiastic and knowledgeable Garden Advisers to work with our clients both in their gardens and online.
This is an unusual horticultural position combining practical gardening knowledge, garden advice, planting design, client relationships and the use of our developing AI systems.
Our clients are generally keen gardeners who want to learn more about gardening and develop their own gardens. Many initially come to us through our One-Day Gardening Course or MyGardenTeam service.
Clients range from enthusiastic beginners with relatively little horticultural knowledge through to experienced and, occasionally, professional gardeners looking for more specialist advice.
The Garden Adviser’s role is to work alongside them, helping them understand their garden, solve problems and develop it over time.
This is an advisory and teaching role rather than a conventional garden-maintenance or sales position.
What Does a Garden Adviser Do?
The work is varied and covers a wide range of practical horticulture, including:
- Pruning and plant management
- Restoration and rejuvenation of established plants
- Propagation
- Plant feeding and soil improvement
- Plant identification and problem-solving
- Pest and disease advice
- Plant selection
- Basic garden design
- Creating planting plans and planting schemes
- Seasonal garden management
- Minor construction and practical garden projects
A significant part of the role involves looking at an existing garden or border, understanding what the client wants to achieve and developing practical ideas and planting solutions with them.
A Challenging Role
This is a challenging and creative horticultural position.
Advisers need to communicate with people who have very different levels of gardening knowledge and explain sometimes complicated horticultural subjects in a straightforward and practical way.
Climate change is also creating new challenges within our clients’ gardens. Drought, heat, excessive rainfall and increasingly variable weather mean that traditional horticultural solutions do not always provide the complete answer.
Garden Advisers therefore need to be observant and prepared to think creatively to solve horticultural problems.
We are not looking for somebody who necessarily knows the answer to every gardening question. We are looking for someone with sound horticultural knowledge who knows how to investigate a problem, consider different possibilities and develop a practical solution.
Horticulture and AI
An important and increasingly interesting part of the position is the integration of horticultural knowledge with GardenAdvice’s own AI systems.
Our systems are designed to remove much of the administration normally associated with an advisory position and allow the Garden Adviser to concentrate on gardens, plants and clients.
For example, after visiting a client, an adviser can discuss the visit with one of our AI agents. The system creates a draft client report from the conversation, which the adviser checks, amends where necessary and approves.
AI is also used to help develop planting plans. An adviser can photograph a border and work interactively with the system, considering soil, aspect, existing plants, colour, style and the client’s requirements before exploring different planting possibilities.
The AI provides information, ideas and administrative support. The horticultural judgement and final recommendations remain with the Garden Adviser.
Previous specialist AI experience is not required. Full training in the GardenAdvice systems is provided.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants would normally have some formal horticultural training, together with practical gardening experience and good plant knowledge.
More importantly, you should be a keen gardener who enjoys plants, solving problems and continually developing your horticultural knowledge.
Good communication skills are essential. Much of the position involves explaining gardening to people who are enthusiastic to learn but may have limited technical knowledge.
Specialist horticultural knowledge is particularly welcomed.
Training and Salary Progression
The salary range is £30,000–£50,000 per annum, with progression normally divided into approximately 12 defined salary increments.
The requirements for progressing through these increments are established beforehand, so advisers know what skills and competencies they need to achieve to reach the next salary level.
Progression includes developing skills through our internal training programmes covering both:
- Practical and theoretical horticulture
- GardenAdvice AI systems and their use in horticultural advice
Progression is therefore based on achieving defined levels of knowledge, skills and responsibility rather than simply length of service.
This provides a structured career path for somebody wishing to continue developing both their general and specialist horticultural knowledge.
Working from Home and Visiting Clients
The position combines working from home with visiting clients and practical work in their gardens.
Garden Advisers normally develop a group of clients within a designated geographical area. This allows advisers to build longer-term relationships with clients and become familiar with their gardens as they develop.
However, the position can involve extensive travel from time to time, particularly where an adviser has specialist horticultural knowledge that would benefit one of our members outside their normal area.
A vehicle is provided for client visits, together with access to additional pool vehicles where required.
Hours and Weekend Working
The position is based on a 40-hour working week, with a degree of flexibility because of the seasonal nature of gardening and client visits.
Spring is our busiest period. Garden Advisers should therefore expect to work most weekends during March, April and May, with days off taken during the week.
Hours worked in excess of normal working arrangements are dealt with through overtime or time off in lieu in accordance with GardenAdvice’s working arrangements.
Initial and Continuing Training
New Garden Advisers normally undertake an initial six-week training period in Bath, with accommodation provided where required.
This covers GardenAdvice working methods, practical horticulture, client advice and training in our AI systems.
Training does not finish after the initial six weeks. Continuing horticultural and AI training forms an important part of the position and is linked to progression through the salary grades.
This Is Not a Sales Position
The Garden Adviser position is not a conventional sales role.
Sales are generally led by clients themselves requesting plants, materials or additional services as their gardens develop.
The adviser’s role is to provide good horticultural advice and build a successful, long-term relationship with the client.
A Full-Time Commitment
Please note that this position is available full-time only.
It is not suitable for combining with an existing gardening business, third-party gardening positions or other substantial employment.
The role can become highly involving as advisers develop responsibility for their own clients and gardens, and continuity of advice is an important part of the GardenAdvice service.
