GardenAdvice notes
Achillea ‘Cloth of Gold’ is a cultivar of Achillea filipendulina, commonly known as Fernleaf Yarrow, and belongs to the Asteraceae family. Native to the Caucasus region and Central Asia, this perennial is celebrated for its large, flat clusters of golden-yellow flowers and aromatic, feathery foliage. Historically, yarrow species have been used for medicinal purposes, particularly for their anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. The plant is also valued for attracting butterflies and other pollinators, enhancing the biodiversity of your garden.
The vibrant flowers are ideal for cutting and retain their colour when dried, making them popular in floral arrangements and crafts. Drought-tolerant and hardy, Achillea ‘Cloth of Gold’ is a low-maintenance plant suitable for borders, wildflower meadows, and cottage gardens.
Soil type
Achillea ‘Cloth of Gold’ thrives in well-draining soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (6.0 to 8.0). It adapts well to poor, dry soils and can tolerate sandy, loamy, or gravelly conditions. To improve drainage in heavier soils, incorporate coarse sand or grit. Avoid overly fertile soils, which can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers.
Location
This plant prefers a sunny location, requiring at least six hours of direct sunlight daily to promote optimal flowering. It is suitable for borders, rock gardens, and exposed sites due to its wind tolerance. While it can handle light shade, flowering may be reduced. Planting in full sun ensures the best display of its golden blooms.
Pest and disease problems
Pests
- Aphids: Small insects that may infest stems and leaves, causing distorted growth and excreting honeydew. Control by spraying with water to dislodge them or apply insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Diseases
- Powdery Mildew: Appears as a white powdery coating on leaves and stems, especially in humid conditions. Prevent by ensuring good air circulation, watering at the base, and avoiding overhead watering. Remove and destroy affected plant parts.
- Root Rot: Can occur in poorly drained soils. Prevent by planting in well-draining soil and avoiding overwatering.
Preventative solutions: Regularly inspect plants for signs of pests or disease. Maintain proper spacing to enhance air circulation and remove any debris or dead plant material from around the base to reduce habitat for pests.
Propagation
Achillea ‘Cloth of Gold’ can be propagated by division, cuttings, or seed.
- Division: Best done in early spring or autumn. Dig up established clumps and gently separate them into smaller sections, each with roots and shoots. Replant immediately in prepared soil.
- Cuttings: Take 10 cm (4-inch) softwood cuttings in late spring or early summer from non-flowering shoots. Remove lower leaves and insert cuttings into a mix of sand and compost. Keep moist and in a sheltered location until rooted.
- Seed: Sow seeds indoors in early spring. Surface sow in trays filled with seed compost; seeds require light to germinate. Keep soil moist and maintain a temperature of 18-21°C (65-70°F). Germination occurs in 14-21 days. Transplant seedlings when large enough and acclimate them before planting outdoors after the last frost.
Note: Propagating named cultivars by seed may not produce true-to-type plants due to genetic variability. Division or cuttings are preferred to maintain the characteristics of ‘Cloth of Gold’.
Pruning, cutting back, and dividing
- Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads throughout the season to encourage continuous blooming and prevent self-seeding.
- Cutting Back: In late autumn or early spring, cut back the foliage to ground level to tidy the plant and promote vigorous new growth.
- Dividing: Divide clumps every 3 to 4 years in early spring or autumn to rejuvenate plants and prevent overcrowding. This also serves as an effective propagation method.
Achillea ‘Cloth of Gold’ will be a long-lasting and vibrant addition to your garden, providing colour and interest throughout the later summer months.
