GardenAdvice Notes
General Notes:
Hosta Guacamole is a bold and beautiful addition to shaded gardens. Its lush foliage provides texture and structure, while the scented flowers offer an unexpected bonus. A low-maintenance favourite that fills out quickly and adds a tropical look to the garden.
Soil Type:
Prefers rich, moist but well-drained soil. Will tolerate a range of soil types if not too dry or waterlogged.
Location:
Ideal for partial to full shade β great for north or east-facing gardens, under deciduous trees, or in containers in shaded courtyards. Avoid full sun, especially in hot, dry regions, as it can scorch the leaves.
Pests and Disease Problems:
Like most hostas, it can be susceptible to slug and snail damage β especially when shoots first emerge in spring. Use organic slug deterrents, copper rings, or physical barriers. Generally disease-free.
Propagation:
Propagate by division in spring or autumn. Best divided every 4β5 years to refresh growth and prevent overcrowding.
Pruning, Cutting Back & Dividing:
Remove spent flower stalks after blooming. In late autumn, once the foliage dies back naturally, cut back to soil level to tidy up for winter. Divide large clumps in early spring or autumn.
Other Notes of Interest:
-
A good candidate for shade or woodland gardens.
-
Excellent planted with ferns, astilbes, and heucheras for contrast.
-
Looks spectacular in terracotta pots or planters under trees or near patios.
-
Low-maintenance once established.
-
Can be used as ground cover in shaded beds.
-
Attractive to pollinators β especially bees.
