GardenAdvice Notes
General Notes:
Osteospermums are a top choice for gardeners looking for vivid colour and drought tolerance. These plants are originally from South Africa and thrive in sun-drenched spots with minimal fuss. They close their blooms at night and on cloudy days, creating dynamic interest in the garden as they respond to light.
Soil Type:
Thrives in free-draining soil, preferably sandy or loamy. Avoid heavy, poorly-drained clay. In containers, use peat-free compost mixed with grit or sand for improved drainage.
Location:
Needs a sunny, sheltered position to perform well. Great for south-facing borders, raised beds, gravel gardens, or terracotta containers. Also performs well in coastal gardens.
Pests and Disease Problems:
Generally pest-free. May occasionally suffer from aphids or mildew if overcrowded or in damp shade. Ensure good airflow and avoid overwatering.
Propagation:
Can be propagated by semi-ripe cuttings taken in summer or by overwintering cuttings under cover. Seed propagation is possible but may not come true to type for hybrids.
Pruning, Cutting Back & Dividing:
Deadhead regularly to encourage repeat flowering. In autumn, cut back lightly if overwintering indoors or prune hard in spring if grown outside and survived a mild winter.
Other Notes of Interest:
-
Extended Flowering: One of the longest-flowering plants in the summer garden β a true workhorse.
-
Attracts Pollinators: Loved by bees and butterflies.
-
Ideal for Pots & Containers: Use in balcony pots, window boxes, or as bedding highlights.
-
Contrasting Companion Plants: Combines beautifully with lavender, salvia, gaura, and silver-leaved plants like Helichrysum.
-
Low Maintenance: A great choice for beginner gardeners or low-input landscapes.
-
Heat and Drought Tolerant: Once established, very little watering is needed β ideal for dry borders or hot spots.
-
Interesting Behaviour: Blooms close in low light, then reopen fully in sunshine β creating movement and change in your garden display.
